Free menu bar app for macOS 13+

Rest your eyes.
Every 20 minutes.

20 20 20 is a tiny, private menu bar app that reminds you to look 20 feet away for 20 seconds — only when you’ve actually been using your Mac.

Built on the 20-20-20 rule

20minutes

After 20 minutes of active screen use, a reminder opens from the menu bar.

20seconds

Start the timer and let your eyes relax. It closes itself when time is up.

20feet

Look at something far away — a window, the end of the room — to let your focus muscles rest.

Small app. Thoughtful details.

Lives in the menu bar

No window, no Dock icon. One small eye in your menu bar, with an optional countdown to your next break beside it.

Counts real screen time

Only active use counts. Step away for five minutes or let the display sleep and the timer resets itself.

Your interval, your call

10 to 60 minutes in 10-minute steps. The default is the classic 20.

A proper 20-second break

Start the timer, look 20 feet away, and the reminder closes itself with a gentle chime when you’re done.

Pause when it matters

In a call or a deep-focus block? Pause reminders, then carry on where you left off.

Private by design

Everything runs on-device. No account, no analytics, no data collected — ever.

Light or dark, it just fits in.

On-device · no data collected

Nothing to opt out of.

20 20 20 never connects to the internet. To know whether you are at your Mac it asks macOS how long ago you last touched the keyboard or mouse — a single number, read on-device and never stored.

Questions

What is the 20-20-20 rule?

Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. Optometrists recommend it to reduce digital eye strain.

Does it track what I do?

No. The app only reads the time since your last keyboard or mouse input, on-device, to know whether you are actively using the Mac. Nothing leaves your computer.

What happens if I ignore a reminder?

After one minute it quietly closes and the countdown starts again. You will not be nagged.

Which Macs does it support?

Any Mac running macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple silicon or Intel.

Can it open automatically when I log in?

Yes. Turn on “Open at start-up” in Settings. macOS may ask you to approve it under System Settings › General › Login Items.
